History of this Event
The first recognised meeting of this group was organised by Professor Jorge Ibanez in Mexico in 2000. This group and members of another meeting in 2001 in Hong Kong felt that there should be a regular event, unsulky but not always on a biennial basis. At the 6th meeting in Kuwait, John Bradley gave a lecture and a workshop devoted to An introduction to the IYC Global Water Experiment and a microscale version was disseminated by UNESCO.
I joined the events in Kuwait as well, on the suggestion of Dr Stephen Breuer, who had invented a scheme of organic chemistry for Universities and Schools in England.
In trepidation I went to Kuwait but was immediately made to feel at home with teachers and researchers in tertiary education and teachers from high schools. It was a sad occasion for many of the delegates as Viktor Oberdrauf from Austria, by all accounts a wonderful demonstrator of chemistry, had died since the previous meeting. But it did finish with John Bradley and Bob Worley accompyning Abdul-Aziz Al-Najjar at 5 am in the morning to appear on Kuwait Breakfast TV! A video put toggether by Peter Schwarz, Mahmoud El-Marsafy and Metodija Najdoski was also presented.
From the 8th meeting in Mexico, Bruce Mattson and Bob Worley collaborated to produce a paper in the Journal of Chemical Education, which also featured on the cover page. Visualizing Dissolution, Ion Mobility, and Precipitation through a Low-Cost, Rapid-Reaction Activity Introducing Microscale Precipitation Chemistry, J. Chem. Educ. 2019, 96, 5, 951-954 https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jchemed.8b00563
From the 10th Meeting in South Africa, the presentations have been included in the a special edition of the African Journal of Chemical Education, Vol 9 No3, on https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajce/issue/view/18557
